Professor Dr Mohammed M Salih-Beck was a patriotic and great academic of our nation who extensively served Sulaimani city and Kurdistan region throughout his life.

Establishing UoS was Professor Salih-Beck’s dream, after he obtained PhD degree in History and political Science from Chicago University, USA and returned back to Kurdistan he discussed with Mr Ibrahim Ahmed the importance of opening a University in Kurdistan region. Since then it became a political demand and materialised ten years later in 1968 and he became the first President of the UoS.

May his soul rest in peace!

Biography of Professor Dr Mohammed M Salih-Beck:

Born in Sulaimani in September 29/09/1925 from a noble Kurdish family, the Xandan family. His father was a Member of Parliament Mr Salih-Beck, his mother was Xanim Towfik Beck, his great uncle was Sharif Pasha Xandan who presented Kurdistan’s Independence case to the League of Nations post First World War, and to the American President and European leaders and was agreed on in the initial treaties.

He has finished his primary and secondary Education in Sulaimani – Kurdistan region then moved to Baghdad for his university study. He then moved to United State of America in 1948 to study History and political Science together with economics and European Languages in Chicago University.

He received his Masters and PhD from that University. He returned back to his country in February 1958. And was the first Kurd to return to his country with PhD degree.

He was greeted by Mr. Ibrahim Ahmed who was then the representative of Kurdistan Democratic Party in Iraq.

Dr Salih suggested to Mr Ibrahim Ahmed the importance of opening a University in Kurdistan since then it became a political demand and materialised ten years later. Dr. Salih was the founder and the first president of University of Sulaimani.

Several attempts made to make the university a branch of Bagdad University to teach Kurdish studies only, but Dr Salih was very firm that it should be an independent university.

This University was extremely important so that the Kurdish people study in their own language to overcome the hurdle of studying in foreign language which delayed and impeded education to a great degree.

This University was paramount in opening the Kurdish mind to communicate with the Free World and put their case for a Sovereign state which the World can understand.

He insisted on British and American model of education. He opened various engineering, scientific, agricultural, and art education, and put the foundation for full Medical studies.

He bought and Allocated Lands for the University together with buildings, library, and laboratories. This became the nucleus for daughter universities in Kurdistan. These universities later on opened Masters and PhD studies.

He sent students for post graduate studies for their masters and PhD degrees to Europe and America.

The University revolutionised Kurdistan forever, and changed the Kurdish mind to a sophisticated Modern and educated nation with excellent links to the Free World.

He planted the seeds of education in Kurdistan region while education was denied and prohibited, especially during a period where there was dangerous political conflict with the central government in Baghdad.

When he was a student in the University of Baghdad, he strongly and passionately spoke about his dream of opening a Kurdish University.

The president of Iraq then insisted to close the university of Sulaimani after Dr Salih left but Dr Salih did not allow that and insisted that he opened the university for the Kurdish people and their children forever.

He also worked with Sir Max Mallowan (Agatha Christies’ Husband), in their work in the discoveries of Mesopotamians civilisation.

He was one of the founders of the History Department in Baghdad University.

He was loved and greatly admired by all who knew him regardless of their race, religion and sect.

He very sadly passed away in Birmingham-UK on 02.03.2016, and buried in London on 3rd March 2016.
