Sulaimani University Medical Students Participate in International Summer Course in Spain

The Erasmus Office of Sulaimani University has facilitated an exceptional opportunity for its medical students to attend an international summer course at the University of Almería, Spain. This exchange program, part of the Blended Intensive Program (Short Mobility), was hosted by the University of Almería, a partner institution of Sulaimani University.

Funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Program, the course focused on Health Sciences, particularly in the areas of Salutogenesis and Diabetes (Healthy Lifestyle through Community Health Assets & Clinical Simulation). The program, which took place from July 8 to July 12, 2024, aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of participating students in various health-related fields.

The program’s objectives were to:

-Equip students with knowledge on health promotion and community health models based on the principles of salutogenesis.
-Train students to identify and map health assets within communities, enabling them to promote healthier lifestyles for individuals, families, and society.
-Foster collaboration among students from diverse countries and disciplines on practical research methodologies within a social context.
-Utilize clinical simulation as a teaching tool for acquiring healthy habits.

The course involved multiple professors with expertise in various specialties, along with students from countries including Spain, Poland, Iraq, Lithuania, Portugal, and Italy. The primary goal was to elevate the scientific proficiency of each student in medical subjects and to guide them in conducting and writing scientific research. The program featured both online learning and in-person activities.

The five-day course was structured as follows:

Day 1: Students were introduced to one another and briefed on the program and agenda by the professors. The day included a lesson on the principles of research and the systematic approach to conducting research. Students then selected topics or questions for their research projects.

Day 2: Lessons continued on the fundamentals of research, covering how to write introductions, set aims and objectives, determine methodologies, present results, and conclude research. Students also learned to create PRISMA flowcharts and resource tables.

Day 3: After receiving relevant academic papers, students divided these among their group members for thorough reading and understanding, which would form the basis of their systematic reviews.

Day 4: Students prepared PowerPoint presentations on their chosen topics, incorporating insights from the academic papers they had studied.

Day 5: Each group presented their findings, with two members presenting and two others handling questions from the audience.

The program was efficiently managed by the professors, who praised the students for their hard work and well-executed projects. The course continues, with students now tasked with completing their systematic reviews, which are due by the end of September.
