On October 26th, 2023, the University of Sulaimani hosted its second alumni reunion for the classes of 1968 to 1981. The esteemed Dr. Haval Abubaker, the Governor of Sulaymaniyah, and Prof. Dr. Kosar M. Ali, the President of the University of Sulaimani attended the event.
The ceremony commenced with a moment of silence as attendees paid their respects to the martyrs. Following this, Prof. Dr. Kosar M. Ali, the President of the University of Sulaimani, addressed the audience. In his opening remarks, he extended a warm welcome and expressed the university’s profound delight at reuniting with its esteemed alumni after many years. These alumni had diligently pursued their education at the university from 1968, with the establishment of the university, to 1981. They had gone on to make valuable contributions to academia and governmental institutions, dedicating many years in service. Regrettably, Prof. Dr. Kosar M. Ali acknowledged the passing of some of the alumni from those years and extended his prayers for their eternal peace. He also extended his sincerest hopes for the well-being of the rest.
Dr. Haval Abubaker, the Governor of Sulaymaniyah, delivered a speech, expressing his pleasure at reuniting with the alumni (1968–1981) of this esteemed university. He extended his congratulations on the anniversary of the establishment of the University of Sulaimani. Dr. Abubaker highlighted that the University of Sulaimani, as the first university established in the region, has a rich history of significant contributions to the nation’s revolutions in Kurdistan. Furthermore, he noted that the university has educated many charismatic and influential individuals in Kurdistan. Since its inception, the University of Sulaimani has also played a vital role in nurturing generations of students from both the Kurdistan region and all over Iraq. Graduates have gone on to serve in various governmental institutions throughout Iraq for many years, contributing to the development of science, academia, and culture in the region. He concluded by stating that the university is a beacon of knowledge, a prominent academic institution, and a source of pride not only for Kurdistan but for Iraq and the entire region.
Subsequently, the university’s president presented an honorary award to one of the distinguished alumni, who also happened to be a former teacher of Prof. Dr. Kosar M. Ali himself. In a reciprocal gesture, the alumni presented an honorary award to the university’s president. During the same event, a photography exhibition took place, featuring photographs of students captured at the university during various occasions from its early years of establishment until the early 1980s.
