On December 24, 2024, Professor Dr. Kosar Mohamed Ali, President of the University of Sulaimani, welcomed Dr. Shaker Sabbar Shawi, coach of the Iraqi national team for persons with disabilities, and his accompanying delegation. The meeting was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Bahadin, Dean of the College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences. During the discussion, the participants emphasized the importance of enhancing the relationship between the University and various societal groups, with particular focus on advancing collaboration in the field of sports.
As part of the engagement, the President of the University presented a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Shawi and the nine members of his delegation in recognition of their contributions and achievements.
In a statement to the University’s official website, Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Bahadin clarified that the delegation represented a sports team for individuals with intellectual disabilities, distinct from the Iraqi Paralympic team. He highlighted the team’s accomplishments, which include winning medals at national, Russian, and international competitions.
Dr. Bahadin further announced plans to host a significant event in Sulaymaniyah dedicated to promoting sports for persons with disabilities. This two-day event, focusing on Paralympic and intellectual disability games, is expected to feature specialized training programs for participants with disabilities. He noted that preparations for the event are currently underway, including the organization of training courses to ensure its success.
