The University of Sulaimani has secured a new grant from the World Food Programme (WFP) to support its Raised Bed Plantation Project, an extension of the Constructed Wetland Project. Dr. Raman Qalandar, Head of the Grant Office at the University of Sulaimani, informed University Site that the project is being conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kosar Mohammed Ali, President of the University of Sulaimani, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Zana Mahmood, Vice President for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies, in close collaboration with the Grant Office.
Dr. Raman further explained that the initiative is led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Chnur Hadi Mahmood, with active participation from team members Dr. Zhino Khalid Mohammed, Hawar Sulaiman Hama, and Kaniaw Mohammed Ahmad. The project, which was implemented on 15 August 2024, involves the cultivation of lettuce irrigated with both sewage water and treated water from the Constructed Wetland Project. The primary objective is to assess the effects of these two water sources on lettuce growth, quality, and composition, and to compare the outcomes against established safety standards to determine the produce’s suitability for consumption.
In addition, the project seeks to elevate public awareness by highlighting the potential health risks associated with consuming crops irrigated with untreated sewage water versus those grown using treated water from the Constructed Wetland Project.
