IREX 2015 small grants announcement

 International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) is pleased to announce the request for applications for the U.S. Embassy funded University Linkages Program (ULP) small grants. IREX launched the small grants project in 2014 with their partner universities: University of Baghdad, University of Technology – Baghdad and the University of Duhok. This year IREX will be expanding the small grants and opening participation all public universities under auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. These small grants will provide an opportunity to support creative ideas that build and foster sustainable relationships in priority areas for Iraqi higher education and expand the impact for participating faculty and departments. Grants to existing ULP universities would be aimed at building onto next steps in collaboration while expanding institutional impact and sustainability on those campuses. Grants to non-ULP universities would be aimed at providing seed funding for U.S. and Iraqi partners to develop longer term relationships and partnerships. Criteria for Selection: - Potential for successful joint project demonstrated through realistic goals and plans - Commitment to sustainable linkages at department and university level - Capacity and availability of key staff to work collaboratively with U.S. partners and with each other - Relevance to higher education priorities in Iraq - Ability to lead reform in their Institutions – willingness to share out information and contacts Full criteria included in application. IREX will assist in matching U.S./Iraqi Universities and provide coaching for institutions as needed. Applicants are invited to develop a project that will be completed within 6-12 months. Applicants can request from $5,000 to $50,000 for their project. Possible areas for collaboration for this grant could include: - Focused capacity building in faculty instructional strategies in a specific academic department - Review and update the curriculum for a specific degree program - Institutional Research Capacity building - University Administration - Industry Engagement Example of projects from the 2014 small grants: - Curriculum revision in Industrial Engineering in preparation for ABET accreditation - Developing courses in Renewable Energy - Developing courses and conducting training for faculty from various departments in Nanotechnology - Sustainability education and awareness In order to participate in the Small Grants it is not necessary to have previous knowledge of the ULP.
 
PROGRAM DATES: Initial proposals are due by March 30, 2015. Upon completion of the first round of awards, IREX will accept additional proposals on a rolling basis until program end or funds are exhausted. Exact program dates will fluctuate based upon the project’s timeline. IREX reserves the right to suggest changes to applicant’s timeline as needed. March 30, 2015: First deadline for submission of applications April 2015: Selection committee reviews, evaluates, and selects finalists May 2015 - April 2016: Program implementation May, 31, 2016 Program reports due.
