SDG1: No Poverty

The University of Sulaimani (UoS) actively supports the mission to end poverty, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 1, through diverse initiatives such as free education, financial aid for students, free housing and health services, entrepreneurial guidance, and engagement with the community. By providing these resources, UoS ensures students can pursue their education, making a broader impact in the fight against poverty.

Free Education

UoS offers free undergraduate and postgraduate programs to all students, except for those who fall below a specified grade threshold or those who study in the evening classes who are required to cover tuition costs but receive a 45% discount each year.

Student Financial Support

UoS provides monthly stipends for both local and out-of-town students residing in university halls of residence. Despite recent economic challenges impacting regular distribution, these funds remain essential in helping students, especially those in lower-income backgrounds, complete their studies.

Free Accommodation & Transportation

Free dormitory housing is available for students from outside Sulaymaniyah, featuring essential amenities and utilities. The university also offers a free shuttle service connecting dormitories to campus facilities, making it easier for students to commute.

Free Health Care

The on-campus health center provides immediate medical assistance at no cost, staffed with a 24/7 GP who addresses minor injuries and illnesses. The GP also offers guidance on sexual and mental health, with referrals for specialized care when needed.

Entrepreneurship Support

Through the Career Development Centre, UoS collaborates with various organizations to foster economic growth by offering training, workshops, and entrepreneurial resources to students seeking to start businesses.

Community Engagement

The American Corner at UoS offers free enhancement programs and English language learning courses, benefiting both students and local community members unable to afford such classes. This effort has enhanced job access and income opportunities, promoting poverty alleviation.

SDG3: Health and Wellbeing

UoS contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3, “Health and Wellbeing,” through accessible sports facilities, healthcare services, community outreach, educational events, and a health-focused curriculum.

Sports Facilities

The University of Sulaimani’s Sports Center provides numerous facilities, available to students and staff for learning and leisure. Graduates are often employed as coaches or educators, while research from the college supports improved physical education practices. During championships, UoS opens its facilities to the public for free.

Health Centre

The campus health center, with a GP on duty around the clock, serves as a primary care point for minor incidents and health advice. The GP also supports students and faculty with reproductive and mental health guidance, referring serious cases for external specialist care.

Workshops and Conferences

UoS hosts workshops and health-related conferences and participates in similar events nationwide.

Curriculum Design

Since 2020, all undergraduate students must take a “physical education” module, which promotes the importance of physical activity for mental and physical health, knowledge they often share with family members.

SDG 4: Quality Education

The University of Sulaimani is committed to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, “Quality Education,” by ensuring accessible, equitable, and inclusive learning opportunities for students and the wider community. UoS initiatives in support of this goal include offering free education, providing diverse learning resources, fostering inclusive learning environments, and strengthening partnerships to expand educational outreach.

Accessible Education

UoS has established a wide range of programs across various fields of study, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees that are accessible to students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. To address financial barriers, UoS offers students with good academic records free education. This approach enables students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access higher education, helping them reach their potential and contribute to societal progress.

Inclusive Learning Environment

UoS prioritizes inclusivity by ensuring that all students, including those with disabilities, can fully participate in academic life. The campus is designed to be accessible, with facilities such as ramps and elevators. Additionally, support services are available to assist students with disabilities in academic planning and coursework. These initiatives contribute to a more inclusive educational experience, supporting equal opportunities for all.

Learning Resources and Infrastructure

The university is equipped with modern libraries, well-equipped laboratories, and computer centers to support a high standard of education. Libraries at UoS provide students with access to an extensive collection of academic resources, including digital and physical materials, across various disciplines. Furthermore, UoS has invested in research facilities and laboratories for practical and technical training, ensuring students gain hands-on experience essential for their future careers. These resources foster a rich, research-oriented learning environment that prepares students for professional success.

Teacher Training and Professional Development

University of Sulaimani’s Centre for Pedagogical Training and Academic Development is dedicated to continuously enhancing the quality of its academic staff through regular professional development programs. Training courses on modern pedagogical practices are regularly provided to help teachers provide a more engaging, student-centered learning experience. Faculty members are also encouraged to attend conferences and seminars, which broadens their expertise and keeps them updated on recent academic trends, ensuring that UoS students receive a quality education aligned with global standards.

Community Outreach and Educational Partnerships

Through collaborations with local and international organizations, UoS’ University and Community Coordination Centre extends its educational impact beyond the university. UoS works closely with schools and community centers in the region to provide educational workshops and skills training for the community. By doing so, UoS helps empower members of the community, fostering lifelong learning and social mobility.

Global Academic Collaboration

To maintain high standards of education, University of Sulaimani’s Erasmus and International Mobilities has established partnerships with academic institutions worldwide, promoting faculty and student exchanges, joint research projects, and curriculum development. Collaborations with international universities and research centers have enriched the academic environment at UoS, exposing students and faculty to diverse perspectives and advanced knowledge. These partnerships not only enhance the quality of education but also align UoS with global best practices in higher education.

SDG15: Life on Land

To support Sustainable Development Goal 15, “Life on Land,” UoS undertakes sustainable farming on campus and organizes educational events on conservation and land sustainability. These initiatives reinforce biodiversity preservation.

Modern Farming Techniques and Technology

In collaboration with the College of Agricultural Sciences, UoS provides hands-on training in modern farming technologies, such as drip irrigation systems, precision agriculture, and the use of environmentally friendly pest control methods.

Promoting Biodiversity and Crop Diversity

UoS emphasizes the importance of biodiversity in farming practices, encouraging farmers to adopt crop diversification strategies. Through its training sessions, UoS educates farmers about the benefits of planting varied crops and integrating native plant species to enhance soil nutrients and support pollinators

Green Space

University of Sulaimani’s Department of Gardens has created green spaces to improve air quality, lower temperatures, and support local wildlife. These efforts are crucial to environmental protection and sustainable development.

SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals

UoS collaborates with local and international institutions, government agencies and NGOs to strengthen its sustainable development initiatives. These partnerships expand the university’s impact, promote knowledge sharing, and drive sustainable development initiatives that benefit both the university and the wider community.

Community-Centered Development Projects

As part of its commitment to community development, UoS partners with local organizations and government agencies to implement projects aimed at improving quality of life and promoting sustainability. For example, the university collaborates with organizations focused on health to provide public health workshops. These collaborations allow UoS to address specific community needs while reinforcing local infrastructure for long-term impact.

Empowerment Programs for Vulnerable Populations

UoS participates in empowerment programs aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and low-income communities. In partnership with the World Food Programme (WFP) and through the EMPACT program, funded by the German Development Agency (GIZ), UoS offers training in job skills such as digital literacy, computer skills, critical thinking skills, and English language proficiency. These programs help vulnerable populations improve their employment prospects, achieve financial stability, and integrate more fully into the community. By equipping these individuals with essential skills, UoS not only provides immediate support but also contributes to long-term regional stability and growth.

Knowledge Exchange through Workshops and Conferences

UoS regularly hosts and participates in workshops, conferences, and seminars that bring together experts from diverse fields to share their knowledge and experiences. These events provide a platform for knowledge exchange on a range of topics, including sustainable development, healthcare, and education. By organizing these events, UoS contributes to building a stronger, more informed community and encourages collaborative problem-solving to address pressing societal issues.

For instance, through the EMPACT program, funded by GIZ in partnership with the World Food Programme, UoS equips vulnerable youth, including refugees and internally displaced persons, with skills in English, computing, and digital literacy. By doing so, UoS contributes to community stability and economic opportunity, aligning with the global effort to meet SDGs.

Through its diverse partnerships, the University of Sulaimani demonstrates a strong commitment to SDG17 by collaborating with a range of stakeholders to promote sustainable development. By nurturing connections at local, regional, and global levels, UoS not only enhances its institutional capabilities but also plays a great role in fostering a more resilient and sustainable community.
